Colonoscopy in Tokyo/Kanagawa

I’m looking to schedule a colonoscopy, and would like to get some recommendations for clinics from anybody that has it done in Tokyo or Kanagawa.

I’ve visited a number of gastroenterologists for constipation and gut pain, however I have only received medication similar to laxatives. I would like to get fully checked to be on the safe side.

Japanese isn’t an issue, though I would feel more comfortable with English. Preferably somewhere that takes NHI if possible.

I read some older threads here, however if anybody has any recommendations or experiences, I would be very grateful.

Preferably western side of Tokyo, or Odakyu side

  1. I was referred here: https://www.hosp.jikei.ac.jp/

Been going here for a cpl years now for my colitis and have had a colonoscopy done here. They take 健康保険 and it’s not super expensive. My doctor is great ! He speaks English and explains stuff in English. Highly recommended!

  2. This is eastern side of Tokyo, but in the interests of being comprehensive (for anyone else who might come across this in future) the St. Luke’s Medilocus clinic in Otemachi does them onsite without referral (although you obviously want to go there for an initial consultation to cover the basics and get your prep medication etc). They’re outfitted for polyp removal etc as they go, but can also refer you on to the main hospital in Tsukiji if your scope reveals a need for anything more extensive (bonus in that they share records and patient accounts etc too).

  3. I and my partner have had multiple colonoscopies here. They discovered the cancer that my partner (late 30s) had thank goodness. They don’t do operations here so we went to another place. The doctor there said that it was in a very difficult spot to see, and the clinic did a great job to find it. Obviously we have good faith in this clinic and will continue to go here from now on

If you just go there and ask for a colonoscopy it will be more expensive than going there first to talk to the doctor about your concerns. If the doctor can give you a recommendation for a colonoscopy it will be cheaper

  4. did mine at https://www.kichijoji-clinic.com after experiencing intermittent stomach pain. If i remember correctly I was adamant on taking a colonoscopy and he obliged so no referral

really nice doctor and we speaked in a mix of Japanese and English. came for a consultation first and the actual colonoscopy cost me around 15,000 under NHI

  5. This place is easy to access from Western Tokyo and you can easily transfer from the Odakyu Line as well.

I would highly recommend [St. Luke’s International Hospital](https://hospital.luke.ac.jp/eng/). The hospital is very English friendly. They’ll explain everything to you in simple English. They always have some nurses who speak very basic English and the doctor who does the colonoscopy also will speak English. It’s not so hard to book anything and the wait times aren’t too bad. The hospital itself inside is very nice (it has a Starbucks!) and quite accessible (about a 5-7 minute walk from the station from my recollection).

They also accept National Health Insurance and you can pay everything using an automated machine in English in the lobby as well.
