The younger ones mostly get it (ブレンド) but some people don’t understand. Clippers on bottom, scissors on top, and blend please. What is an equivalent term for blend?
The Japanese have their own hair lingo, are you sure that’s not the right wording for what you want? I remember looking up a word that although was correct in a salon, when translated it sounded like anything from “shave my head” to “condition my head.”

My stylist uses the term “fade” for what you’re describing. If you want more of a distinct line between top and bottom then it’s a “2-block”.
フェードカット
Yah my non-English speaking barber in Ginza understood “fade”. Almost got it right too 🙂
Bowl cut?
Stop by DAISO, and get a set of 4 or 5 nested bowls, each one consecutively smaller. Show the gentlemens barber that, he’ll get the message.

Proceed to make smoothie.
Show a picture, point, “this!”
If you could show a photo of what you want to the barber/stylist, that would probably be best.
They probably be like : “hmm? coffee?”
But yeah gradiation and fade usually what I heard when referring to hair. Fade seems more common to use though.

You can also say 2-block if you want hard distinct lines.
Yeah, as a person with a beard, finding someone who is able to actually do my beard correctly is near impossible. I’ve been through 5 barbers in the Kansai Area now, trying to find someone who can look at a photo of my beard and give me what I want and nobody can. No combination of words seems to do the trick.
Went to a barber behind Harajuku during summer last year and they got it first try.

I have showed people pictures of me. Actually me. And they still butchered me. Regardless of the language barrier, there are a lot of people here who lack talent in the hair industry.
I think you NEED to first check social media (specifically instagram) before you ever go to a salon/shop. Look at their work and decide if you can trust them. There are a lot of hair dressers here and many of them are not skilled or simply have inadequate tools. It took me a year and half to find a guy who I was satisfied with.
Edit: my hair dresser says フェード. You should also specify whether you want it high or low.

I’m sure this has been said, but just show a picture. I’ve had this problem a bunch cos I wanted to say “feathered” and “layered” but couldn’t. Luckily for you, blending is much easier to show in a picture.
Skin fade is what my place calls it in katakana but I have had some (usually cheaper places with older workers and clientele) not know what I’m talking about it in the past.
Go to “Sozo hair & make” or “The chop shop at Kichijoji”. Sozo has a lot of English speakers and the chop shop has Julian (owner), he’s half Japanese/German but speaks fluent English.
Some of those quick station cut shops have staff that know how to do it and some that specialise in it kind of – just have to ask (and be kinda lucky). The ones near military bases probably are better at it since faded are a common military cut

Not every barber knows how to do a fade.
You might need to look for places that are a bit pricier to get your cut looking proper.
