If a vocab learning app offers the option between using kanji and kana or only kana, what is better for a beginner?

I’m very new to studying Japanese, and I’m using Drops to get a feel for the language and learn some vocab. If you’re not familiar with the app, it teaches how to read and write kana and then 250 kanji before getting into vocabulary, grouped into themes.

So onto my question, the app gives you the option to learn vocab using either kana only, or kana+kanji. Which one is better? I’m leaning towards kana+kanji but I want to make sure this isn’t hindering my progress or a massive PITA for beginners.

EDIT: I’m not sure if this matters but the app default setting is “kana only”.

  1. hard to say without knowing your level, beginner is a pretty broad spectrum. I’d say if you are already confident in kana and the kanji has furigana or an option to read the kana with it then go with that.

  2. I think the sooner you start using kanji the better. There’s no reason to delay learning kanji, one thing you can do to make it easier is to enable furigana if possible.
