Does Jr (west) have a delayed train policy for rail passes and if so how does it work?

So Im travelling from Yonago back to Tokyo today on a rail pass but the weather meant that my train got delayed and thus I’m stuck in Okayama for the night. Now my pass ends today but I haven’t made it to my final destination and the shinkansen from Okayama to Tokyo is gonna be expensive. Does JR have any kind of compensation option for either a lodging at Okayama or for the last leg of the journey?

  1. From JR Pass usage condition:

    > Once you start using the PASS, the periods of use cannot be extended, nor will any refund be issued, even if trains and other qualifying transportation services are suspended or delayed for any reason, including natural disasters. Moreover, the JR Group will not bear additional costs due to changes in your route, such as alternative transportation costs or accommodation charges.

(Note that there are some compensation for regular ticket, just not for a pass)

(JR West Pass also have similar condition but I am not sure which pass you are talking about here since to go to Tokyo you must be using the nationwide pass, but if you were using nationwide pass either you shouldn’t be posting here or you are breaking the law)

  2. I was in that situation one on the Seishun 18 ticket. They won’t do anything for you. I had to pay for a new Shinkansen ticket to get back.

    Good luck!
