Tokyo places to study/read not at cafes (libraries, etc)

Hello, and thanks in advance for any potential recommendations!

I was hoping to hear people’s go-to public places to study or read in Tokyo, ideally which aren’t cafes. So this would preferably be quiet and wouldn’t need to buy a drink or anything to use.

I live pretty far away from my ward’s public library, but it seems that it might be the best option at this point?

Thanks again 🙏

  1. Some people use karaoke rooms, which can be very cheap especially in the mornings. Otherwise, the library is your best bet if where you live doesn’t work for you.

  2. The Shibuya Central Public Library is enormous and a short walk from Harajuju Station.

For those so motivated it also has a large motorcycle parking area facing the police station in the event you’re looking for a somewhat secure place to park your bike.

  3. National diet library. People come in for all kinds of research whether it’s serious or not. I’ve seen people reading Manga too. Very calm but a lot of “irrashaimase, card moushiagete douzo”

  4. I go to a food court in a small mall to study. In the morning it’s not crowded, and although there is background noise, it’s more like white noise that I can block out.

  5. Manga cafe are actually designed for reading. Most of course read the comics they have there but you could easily bring your own
