What’s the best university to learn Undergraduate Naval Architecture?

My professor from my home country said that Hiroshima University is the best uni to learn naval architecture. But I kinda doubt that, because Kyushu and Osaka university (which is the top 10 uni in Japan, as I know) also have naval architecture in their undergraduate program. But once again, my professor, he graduated from Hiroshima University, recommends me to go to Hiroshima. So now I am confused which one should I believe? I need some testimony from you guys. Would very appreciate if there is any one who is willing to share their experience about this.

  2. You’re asking about a very niche thing here. It would be better to talk to other professors in your field if you don’t trust your professor’s assessment of the universities.

Also note that there is more to “best” than just rankings— programs have different pros and cons, different focuses, and different styles of teaching. And while one university might be overall ranked higher, it doesn’t necessarily translate to all programs being “better.”

  3. Hey I graduated from Hiroshima University (Hirodai), masters degree, but still.

Someone else pointed out it’s kind of a niche subject and you’d have more luck talking to people in the field.

For something like this, it’s kind of important to know what you want to do with that degree? Do you plan to live in japan after graduating? If so coming to Hiroshima is probably not your best bet. Hirodai has great programmes and although it’s ranked 11th, is still widely regarded as a great school. But jobs are scarce here. I was lucky enough to study int’l politics and immediately get a job. But that was pure networking (as I had lived and operated in Hiroshima/Osaka/Tokyo for years before getting my masters)

Also, do you speak Japanese? If you plan on taking naval architecture courses and want to get a job doing that here, Japanese is a must.

But if you study at Osaka, you’d probably be fine language wise as they have the capacity to have courses in English. Kyushu is also big enough to have similar capacity.

Anyhow if you can give more information, I can advise a bit better.

That being said, doesn’t really matter where you go to school, if you’re talented people will find you. I used to think rankings held weight, and they do in my home country. But in Japan, unless you go to Tokyo U, you’ll get the same reactions. No matter the uni
