Has anyone worked at British Hills?

I have a second interview with them next week. There is next to no info online about what it’s like to teach there. I haven’t been able to find any reviews from teachers at all, which is strange since they’ve been around since 1994.

If anyone has worked there or knows anything about what it’s like there, I would greatly appreciate the info!!!

Thank you so much!

  1. I hung out with them all once. They make a decent ALT high-end salary and save a lot but it’s like living in an island in terms of social life. When I hung out with these guys they were all alcoholics and completely jaded about their jobs. It could have changed though. That was 10 years ago.

  2. Actually I interviewed there a while back and at that point I was able to find various people talking about it online. The thing that stuck with me was someone saying “it’s either the best or the worst decision you’ll make, it completely depends on whether you get on with the other people there. I worked there and I made friends for life, but it’s a long drive to the nearest town” I decided not to do it but for you I dunno. I have students who’ve been there and they loved it. The people in the interview seemed really nice too. That’s all I’ve got.

  3. I remember reading that one of the guys who worked their had ‘relations’ with two teen gals. And BH had to pay off the parents.

So behave if you get accepted for a position.

  4. I’ve heard only good reports about the place. They have more than a decent reputation. Not a place from slackers, apparently.

  5. Any Japanese person I’ve talked to about it really enjoys going there, so it’s definitely legit! I’m pretty sure it’s in my prefecture. Not sure what it’s like to work there, but from a consumer’s end the people in my city like it a lot!!

  6. I don’t know about working there, but it’s been operation for a while. It’s owned by the Kanda Gaigo Group which owns Kanda University of International Studies.

  7. There’s a youtube channel of someone that works there –> global family in fukushima

  8. I lived in that area of Fukushima, and yes, it is REMOTE. Beautiful, but yes, you’ll be isolated. If you don’t have a driver’s license, I strongly recommend you get one now. The bus probably doesn’t come all that often, once an hour probably, at best. Taxis are expensive. But the place itself is lovely!

  9. I don’t know what it’s like to work there, but I have been there. It’s definitely isolated and I got the feeling the people working there were isolated too. They seemed desperate to talk to us. It was winter, and snowing. It put me in mind of The Shining.

One of the staff told us that the hiring materials suggested they would be much closer to Tokyo than they actually are. It’s an 80 minute Shinkansen ride from Tokyo followed by a 40 minute bus ride.

As a Brit myself, who’s lived in Japan for some time, I got a real “uncanny valley” feeling from the place. It’s like stumbling into a fever dream of Britain, where everything is old and made of wood, all the food is overpriced, and Japanese kids unwillingly use halting English to learn how to play cricket.

  10. Hi, I worked at British Hills. Shoot me a message if you’re interested in talking.

  11. One of the schools I know of has a trip there. The students who attend are about ~15/16 y/o and are a special set of students (60~?) that all have reasonable to near native english levels. The general feedback from the students and visiting English staff all seem to be very positive.

Not sure what it’s like to actually be contracted there though.
