PSA: Exceptionally, the Consulate of Japan in Seoul can endorse Japanese visa applications for Canadian citizens

I’ve been making some travel and visa plans and I e-mailed the Consulate of Japan in Korea to ask if it’s tentatively possible to apply for a Japanese visa there even if I’m not a resident of Korea.

Here’s what they told me (original e-mail in Japanese, my English translation):

* As a general rule, foreigners who do not have a Korean residence card cannot apply for Japanese visa endorsement in Korea.
* However, as an exception, Canadian citizens can apply for Japanese visa endorsement in Korea.

If you have a Canadian passport and a copy of your certificate of eligibility, you can apply for a visa in Seoul. You also need to bring a 4.5\*4.5 or 3.5\*4.5 photograph taken within the last 6 months, and a visa application form ([https://www.kr.emb-japan.go.jp/people/ryouzibu/visaform\_en.pdf](https://www.kr.emb-japan.go.jp/people/ryouzibu/visaform_en.pdf))

Also of note, they say that, currently, applications for visa by individuals are suspended at the Consulate of Japan in Seoul, and that you should apply for a visa through travel agencies designated by the embassy here: [https://www.kr.emb-japan.go.jp/what/visaagencylist.pdf](https://www.kr.emb-japan.go.jp/what/visaagencylist.pdf)

Of the agencies listed in the previous link, the following are known to have English-speaking staff:

* Soho travel 02-322-1713\~4
* Yunitis 070-7619-3602
* H-global 02-732-6932
* Wooyoung Travel 02-3210-0029
* World bridge L&C 02-6263-0020
* Perfect tour 02-777-7729

Furthermore, it takes about 5 working days to process, so they recommend to apply 1-2 weeks before.

I didn’t find this information when I searched for it myself so I thought I’d share it here in case others are looking for it in the future.

It’s good to be Canadian!
