Buying a Nintendo Switch

Hey everyone,

I am living in Japan for about a year on a working holiday visa and am looking to buy a Nintendo Switch here to play the new Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom but I have a few questions.
Can I put the switch language in English on a Japanese bought system? For games as well?
Can I play games I buy in The Netherlands on the Japanese bought Switch?
And will it be possible to use with the voltage difference when I go back home and play it there?
I live in The Netherlands so we use different voltage there.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Edit: thanks for the swift and many replies everyone! ありがたいです!
I will definitely buy a switch then to play the new zelda. Everyone enjoy the f*ck out the new one!!!

  1. I am not sure about the games you bought in the Netherlands but about the new Zelda game you should be able to change the language because I was able to change it in BOTW and I bought both the switch and the game here. Hope it helps

  2. You’ll have no issues with playing the switch in English. Most switch games have English options available, although there are occasionally some that don’t, so check before you buy. All of the Nintendo first party games (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc) support English.

  3. All games are gonna be in the system language (even the one you bought in The Netherlands) and you will definitely be able to switch it to English so it won’t be a problem.
As for the voltage difference, when I brought it with me in France I bought a new power cable once I got there (official Nintendo one, I think it was around 25€ or something) and it worked just fine !

  4. The switches are all the same, games as well. Only some Japanese market only games will not have English. Electricity is not a problem, the power source is universal. You will need and adapter back in Europe. I have Japanese and Aussie switch, some Japanese, some Aussie and some European carts.

  5. Altough your Switch may be japanese, your nintendo switch account can be in whatever country you want.

To claim japanese games by code you’ll need to switch regions on the account but that is as easy as pressing some buttons. After changing the region you can always go back to other regions as soon as you want.

Source: I have a japanese Switch with multiple japanese and brazilian bought games in a single account and all of them work in english.

  6. Yeah, no issues with setting language options. That’s one of the nice things about the switch. If you want your switch in English ( no matter where you bought it ), you can do that. I think it even asks which language you want when you set it up.

Games are a bit trickier. Some games let you set the language inside the game, so you can play in a different language then the Switch system language setting. Other games are linked to the system language setting. That can be annoying to some degree if you want both. Like I want the system language in English, so I can understand the options, but want to play some games in Japanese to practice the language. You’ll have to check on each individual game what languages it supports, some can be downloaded, I believe, even if they are cartridges. If it doesn’t support that, it will at least run in the default language it came with.

As for voltage issues, that’s probably not a problem. You may need a special adapter for the switch cradle’s power supply, but the switch itself uses a standard USB C connector and can charge from any USB C charger.

  7. If it has an English counterpart and you set your language to English then yes it’ll be English, but if it’s Japanese exclusive then no it’ll be in Japanese only

Nintendo never region locked their devices that’s PlayStation and maybe Xbox

  8. I think most of your questions were already answered, but just adding something regarding languages: to get an idea if english/dutch will be supported you can check on the nintendo eshop which languages are available on the game page **(対応言語)**

  9. Yeah no problem

U can switch to English and play games from Netherlands and can also use different users in different regions to load games.

I buy switch vouchers in US and Germany to play games

I wouldn t buy Japanese region games if I were you
