I’ve read about ‘osaifu keitai’ allowing for support for payments etc using NFC on android/iphone.
The websites/reddit posts I read were from quite some time back and indicated that phones supporting this MUST be bought from Japan only.
I have a phone from outside Japan, is it still the case that it will not be compliant with this standard?

If it’s a recent-ish iPhone then it should support Felica. If it’s an Android it has to be bought in Japan to have Osaifu Keitai.
If your android device supports NFC, you might be able to use it on some merchants. But you can’t use emoney like iD, Quicpay, etc. And you can’t use your Android on any transit because they only support osaifuketai
