Japan Post Bank Golden Week ATM suspension

Just asking out of curiosity but did any Japan Post Bank account holders receive a notification that they were suspending ATM usage during Golden Week?

We found out at a very inconvenient time last week and it was extremely annoying. Aside from that, I’m just curious if they contacted account holders at all as I received no notifications through SMS or email.

Edit: Thanks everyone! I guess I’ll just pay better attention next time – or just use my Sumitomo account more 😊

  1. Yucho posts the notifications at the bank and on their ATMs.

Edit: I didn’t receive a notification, but many people did, it seems. It was also posted all over this subreddit multiple times.

  2. I received 5 (five) separate email notifications on Mar 23, Mar 27, Apr 20, Apr 28, and May 2. 3 are from Yucho Debit (since I have their debit card), and 2 are from Yucho Direct (their online banking service).

  3. and it was posted here too quite a few times to avoid these kind of situations.

  4. I didn’t receive any notifications, mind you I only have a simple savings account with passbook and card.

I was fully aware of the suspension as there were multiple posts about it on Japan-related subreddits before GW…

  5. Yes, I received several email reminders about it

    “【重要】ゆうちょダイレクトの休止(ゴールデンウィークの一部期間)について” starting from late March.

Do you have a yucho-direct account? If so, you might like to check your spam mail folder. The email reminders were sent from 【ゆうちょ銀行】 <information (at) jp-bank.japanpost.jp>

There were also several posts here as well. I believe it was also posted at their branches and ATMs, so you should have seen notices about it (although it might have been in Japanese only) if you have used either some 2 months before GW; and displayed as a message if you logged into their online banking/yucho direct.

  6. Multiple emails and letters.

It was also posted on this sub reddit ever other day as we were getting closer to the day. I think it was a sticky thread for a while as well.

  7. Like everyone else has said, I received multiple emails and letters about it. It was also on the JP post home page, there were TV and Youtube adverts, and newspaper articles about it. As well as several posts here reminding people about it.
Tbh it’s kind of hard to see how anyone could have been unaware of the closure.

  8. I didn’t get anything via email, phone or letter, but was aware of it through advertising.

  9. I found out in a very inconvenient way when I needed to take out money lol
Those fuckers think the ATM is alive or some shit, it doesn’t need opening hours 🙃

  10. They’ve had notices on all the ATM for months. I think the closure is stupid and annoying but I can’t complain about not being notified. If I missed it it was on me.

This stuff is a reality of life here which is why I recommend you maintain an alternate bank account as a means of payment in case your bank decides to shut during the holidays. I missed the notice for one of these years ago and was pretty annoyed. These days I just accept it as the fact of life here. Banks suck.

  11. I was also not aware of this. I assumed it was because of gw. I’m lucky I did not traveled outside the weekend.

  12. I received two email notifications from Yucho Direct on 3/25 and 4/19, and those info were also posted at their ATMs and branches.
It is not uncommon for Japanese banks to close down for days during long holidays (GW, New Year), so you should always assume that they will be closed, and have some cash at hand, even if you have more than one bank account.

  13. I bought stamps a week before GW, and they reminded me about the closure even though I don’t have an account there. They also gave me a paper notice with the stamps.

It reminded me of the “old days” of taking out enough money on Friday nights as all ATMs were closed on weekends…

  14. You should remember that it’s normal in Japan for ATMs to close for holidays; not limited to just GW. Always plan ahead and make sure to double check your ATM’s hours before holidays

  15. I received several emails about it, saw it on their site when I went to check if my paycheck was deposited by my company, and saw the message on the ATMs I used.
