Opinions on kumon

Has anyone used this service? I saw they have a Japanese study by correspondence but figured i would see if anyone here has used them.

  1. I can’t speak to it, but I did do Kumon math as a child. It did not help me improve, in fact I don’t think I got anything positive out of the experience at all. So hopefully their language program is significantly different from the math. Still, there’s probably better/more efficient ways to study than a correspondence course.

  2. Just hit a self study slump figure if i paid for a course or something id get motivated

  3. I did it for a while. It was interesting and seemed to help a lot (got a lot of “your Japanese has really improved!” after a few months).

But you gotta be motivated. Mailing the materials back out got to be a chore. And though you have two times you can talk with the Japanese teacher a week, their availability didn’t match mine so I never coukd take advantage of that.

Ultimately I can see it working for people who are good at staying self-motivated. The workbook pamphlets were varied and sized right for a good self-study session. But the cost wasn’t worth it. If you work your way through a textbook you’ll get just as much out of it.
