PR “Work visa for 5 consecutive years.”

Hi all, a little confused by this wording. If I’ve lived in Japan for 10 years consecutively, having a working visa for all of them, does that count? Or does that mean that one of the visas must have been a 5 year visa (and that my 1, 3,3,3 won’t count?)

  1. yes, it counts. You just need to have resided in Japan for a certain number of years on a work visa. They don’t give out 5-year visas enough, hardly anyone would ever get PR if that was a requirement…

  2. Holding a 3 year Status of residency, at the time of the application is fine.

See “Note 1” at the bottom of page 2 here: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/content/930003492.pdf

*”(Note 1) In these guidelines, for the time being, any person whose period of stay is “three years” shall be regarded as a “person who is allowed to stay up to the maximum period of stay”, as specified in the above Section 1 (3) c).”*

  3. I think what the wording means, is that 5 consecutive years in Japan must be on working visas. The time before that, maybe even after, can be any other visa. Student, working holiday, spouse, etc.
