Android 13 stopped connecting to Aeon WiFi hotspots?

My older Android 12 device connects fine to Aeon and Daiei access points, but 13 refuses without manual intervention by accessing an http URL from Chrome and waiting for a redirect.

Anyone else having similar problems?

  1. Likely their captive portal isn’t properly configured with https and Android 13 is rejecting it. iOS has done this for a while, there are an annoyingly large number of places(and increasingly a very small number of sites that support plain http at all) in Japan that don’t have this configured properly.

  2. Yeah. As phones and browsers become more insistent on secure connections, captive portals become less and less easy to access.

Captive portals are awful festering garbage and implementing one should be punishable be immediate death penalty, but they’re not going away, so someone somewhere needs to create a standard for them that everyone can live with.

  3. I think Android 13 is more temperamental and has anger management issues. After all, it was scrapped because it had some minor issues in production, but described as nearly perfect.
It’s extremely strong after absorbing other androids parts though, so maybe you could do that.
