Medication for “subclinical” hypothyroidism

I’ve had two different doctors tell me that I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, based on blood work as well as an ultrasound. This is completely unsurprising as both my father and sister have the disease, and we are fairly certain my paternal grandmother did too. However neither doctor was willing to prescribe medication, even with some mild pushback from me, because my test results are within what is considered “normal” range (they have to draw the line somewhere, even if it is 95th percentile 🙄).

Does anyone know of a specific doctor/clinic in the Tokyo area that is, shall we say, more progressive in prescribing medication to treat *symptoms* of hypothyroidism rather than solely relying on test results? Or should I just be a bit more persistent with my existing doctor? For the record, I went to Ochanomizu Thyroid Clinic and had a good experience otherwise.

(As an aside, you are welcome to provide your unsolicited opinion on my medical choices but I reserve the right to ignore it. Just looking for a very specific provider recommendation here, thanks 😊)

  1. I have Basedow syndrome, which is a different thyroid problem. I go to Ito Hospital in Omotesando. They are specialists in thyroid conditions and I’ve been totally satisfied with their treatment. They also have English-speaking doctors as well as a website in English, if that helps. I transferred to Ito from my local hospital, which I was considerably less satisfied with. I don’t know if my experience helps at all since my disease is different, but at least it’s information about a different option.

  2. My wife orders チラーヂン online from オオサカ堂 to treat her Hashimoto disease. Like you and many others in Japan, she was given a diagnosis but despite experiencing symptoms doctors refused to give her a prescription. This is a very common problem with treating Hashimoto here.
