Hi fellow Gaijins, my first post here. I’ve been living in Japan for a few years now and because I always went to an International school/college, the need to learn Japanese was never really there for me. But everyone around me was like you need to at least be able to understand what they’re saying. So I did what everyone was doing, I watched Dragonball and lots of other animes, and thanks to that I can understand basic level japanese conversation.
But now I feel like I need to be able to read, at least the government docs and stuff sent to me. All this time I’ve been relying on google translate, which works but it would be great if I could read on my own. So I tried reading mangas, cuz I can understand as long as there are furiganas but once I see kanji without furigana beside it, I’m outta there. Sorry for making this rant this long but how did y’all learn kanji. I tired apps they aren’t all that appealing and got nothing but ads in it.

Head and shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes!
Buy some textbook to learn Japanese from, or see if there are evening Japanese class in your area to attend.

Maybe youtube Japanese lessons might help

Anki doesn’t have ads. It’s appealing enough. You have to work hard for years.
WaniKani 1-2 years. A hard slog but worth it IMHO. Japanese conversation first of course.
