Visa Extension Question…

Hello all. I’ve been attending language school here in Japan since Spring of 2022 and my visa expires at the end of July this year. I’ve already gathered all the paperwork I need from my school and filled out the application for an extension but I am concerned about my attendance rate.

What I want to ask is, does immigration (Nagoya) look at the month by month attendance or does it only take the overall attendance into consideration?

Due to me being sick (was pretty bad in June/July 2022, my monthly attendance was in the 70s) my rate took a hit but since then it’s been in the high 80s/low 90s every month. In my overall attendance though, my rate is 87.3%.

What are you guys’ experience renewing/extending a student visa?

Thanks for reading.

  1. Best to ask your school just to be sure, rules can chanre from year to year.
But my class last school year in Tokyo were told the absolute minimum was 75% overal attendance rate. Month to month isn’t as important.
Best to stay above 80% to be on the safe side.

Rebuilding that attendance rate is also a much harder thing to do than making it drop as I found out too after getting sick.

    Good luck with the renewal!
I had about 5 hours total of waiting time when applying for and another 4 hours when picking up my new visa here in Tokyo. Don’t know how crowded it is there, but make sure you have something to do in case you need to wait, and try to be the first at the door in the morning.
