I’m now at a critical point in my life

こんにちは皆さん

I have just recently graduated high school and am expected to start university within a few months. Now I am presented with two choices, one of them being studying under the G30 English based Physics program in Nagoya University. Although I want to study and work later in CS/IT, but by the time I applied no university was really offering CS in English. I don’t mind studying physics, but that’s not what is concerning me. I am more concerned that if circumstances arise if I’ll be able to find jobs later on with my physics degree in Japan. On a more extended note, I am also concerned if I’ll be able to go for MSc in CS later on, be it Japan or somewhere else.

The reason for my dilemma is I have sought to go to Japan for a long time, and when finally presented with the opportunity to do so, that to if I’ll be able to study in a reputed university, I should not be taking it lightly. What is concerning me is if I would be at a disadvantage in terms of future employment prospects later on, like trying to find a job in CS/IT with my physics degree.

The other option is in Hong Kong. If I do choose to study there I’ll very likely not have problems finding employment, but then again I’m afraid I’ll miss out on Japan. I am aware that MNCs in Japan have more reasonable pay and work-life balance, but then it’s the matter of making it into the organisations at the first place. I know there are IBM headquarters in Japan, who may have work for physics graduates, but then again, that is a whole knew topic. I just want to mention I am aware of the MNC vs local company work conditions.

So the questions stand as:

1. With all that being said, should I pick Japan over Hong Kong and do my undergrad in Physics?

2. How much should I be concerned with finding future employment and/or study opportunities in MSc later on, be it Japan or anywhere else (I mean this is THE subreddit about moving to Japan, I’ll expect answers in the context of Japan anyways but I’ll love to hear about prospects elsewhere too)?

Thanks a lot for reading over my rant. ありがとうございます!

(I still did not get an acceptance offer. I know it is quite ignorant of me to preemptively ask such a question but by the time I hear back from MeiDai, I’ll need to make a split second decision on where to go, so I must plan everything while I have time.)

  2. FWIW there are a lots of physics undergrads in IT, usually in backend and high-performance systems I believe.

  3. You can do a bunch of physics stuff that’s closely related to computer science so I don’t think the field is a problem. Natural sciences and computer sciences are merged fields these days. I’m sure there are a lot of labs in Nagoya that do stuff that’s half physics and half CS. I actually know a lot of people who aren’t CS majors but work for IT companies, like aerospace engineering majors and bioinformatics majors. Even less of a problem if you’re going to get a masters degree in CS.
