  1. Tomorrow Tears of the Kingdom is coming out, and I’ve preordered it and I’m gonna play it in Japanese!!! I’ve been studying the language for over two years, and it’ll be way above my level, but honestly don’t care and I’m hyped!!!

  2. マックる – to eat at mcdonalds

as an american, this has become my new favorite verb

  3. Went to a park which was made in Japanese style. Was able to read the name written in katakana and kanji. Friends were impressed

  4. I’m getting married today to my Japanese fiancé! Doesn’t get better than that.

  5. This is so wholesome I can’t

I struggle with Japanese grammar (which IRKS me bc English grammar is my THING) but yesterday I got 80% on my BunPro reviews and it made me feel like I just MIGHT get it one day…usually I get in the low 70s, high 60s, for reference 😅

  6. I do writing practice everyday and I finally memorized the stroke order of 顰蹙 after 638472838 tries !!

  7. I’ve been watching SpyxFamily without subtitles. WITHOUT SUBTITLES

18 year old freshman me who joined 101 Japanese class would be so excited she reached her goal of watching anime without subtitles.

Thankfully 18 year old me did not have the wisdom to realize that being able to watch some anime without subtitles doesn’t mean ALL anime without subtitles or she would have quit at day 1.

I still got a long way to go (nor does my goal have anything to do with anime anymore lol)

  8. I’m at chapter 18 of Genki 2! I’m really stoked to get to Tobira, it will probably take me another 2 months before I get there but I can’t wait.

  9. I’ve recently met on twitter some Japanese people who are learning Spanish (I’m from Spain) and we help each other with our language learning and thanks to that I’ve discovered that I’m able to hold conversations in Japanese with them. It is really awesome to see the effort paying off!

  10. I have a Japanese ‘pen friend’ (email friend but still) and I showed her my hiragana and she said it was super かわいい – I am choosing not to interpret that as meaning ‘childish’ haha

  11. I’ve started learning Japanese again this week after like 8 months of not doing it. Going through Genki 1 now. Hopefully going to visit Japan by myself during the summer so need enough to get by.

  12. I started reading my first manga in Japanese yesterday! It’s おじさまと猫. Even though I don’t get everything, I almost cried when I realized I could actually follow the story. I’m so happy. I’ve been learning by myself for a year and a half but I don’t dedicate any particular amount of time each day to it, I just use Duolingo and Kanji Study here and there when I have 5 minutes of free time between other tasks.

  13. I haven’t studied in over a year! 🎉

^(I really should pick it up again 😔)

  14. This is kind of a weird one but you guys will get it.

In my organization, we have a Japanese guy named Hiro, and his surname is long and complicated for good measure.

I had never met him before, but today I had to sign him out a prox card for an event. He came up to the desk and (since he was the only east asian person in line and expected to show up), I immediately asked “Hiro [lastname]”? right as he exasperatedly said “Just call me Henry, it’s easier -” Then he stopped and stared at me bug eyed for a second. “wait, you said it right!”

Apparently all of our other coworkers couldn’t get either of his names pronounced right. He said he went by Henry but now I’m allowed to call him Hiro because I say it correctly.

  15. I have ordered some BIC gelo pens and am about to start handwriting Kanji. I’m quite excited i think it’ll improve my kanji skills!

  16. I know 1660 Kanji from RTK!! It took longer than it should have but I do not despair and continue to study until I am done with the roughly 3000 that are in RTK 1 and 3. Finishing them will mark a great achievement in my journey!!

  17. My study results are really average atm but the other day I went to a bar and managed to hold a conversation with two different pairs of Japanese people. So that feels really good.

  18. Watching Love Village on Netflix with Japanese sub and orig Japanese audio. The show’s so funny and weird.

I think my listening skill is fine. My speaking skill on the other hand…

  19. I can understand a few sentences from Aimer’s songs. I can even read some of her lyrics. I can also sing along to some of her songs.

  20. I have nothing to “brag” about other than that I’m now able to understand around 90% of one of my favorite games that I probably put 1000 hours in when I were younger without understanding a simple word

Now we go from Sengoku Basara 2 to Sengoku Basara 4 (3 is localized, Capcom is weird)

  21. I recently scrolled through twitter where I follow quite some japanese artists and idols and I was stunned by how many kanji I was able to read. I started learning Kanji with Wanikani a while back after totally giving up on it because it seemed too complex to learn. It is truly such a wonderful feeling to finally understand how Kanji actually work and actually being able to read them.

  22. my small pea of a brain was able to memorize all the hiragana

I don’t know if its the age but I have a hard time memorizing anything at all

  23. I play MonHun weekly with a Japanese friend and he doesn’t dumb down his way of talking for me (although probably because he has no concept for that)

Last time we finally defeated Fatalis!

  24. Konnichiwa tomodachi! In 2 years I will move to Nihon (Dattebayo!) And I can meet some sweet Jap men and women!!!

  25. I was able to finally play the game that inspired me to study Japanese in the first place. It required a lot of dictionary work (and added roughly 1,200 words and phrases to my flash card deck) but I did it!

  26. I went to see the Suzume movie while I was on holiday in Japan and I was unable to understand about 50%-75% of it without subtitles!

I’ve also been watching Terrace House with Japanese subtitles and been understanding most of it save for a few obscure words I have to look up occasionally.

  27. Tried one of those ear cleaning services while walking around Akihabara last week. Managed to hold a conversation with the lady in 80% Japanese. She was a real sweetheart though, trying to also use English when I couldn’t understand. She nihonggo jouzu’d me at the start, and I’m pretty sure she’s just being polite, but that really made my day!

  28. I still have a long way to go. But today I was teaching an English class and was able to read out loud the Japanese example sentences for the students to translate to English; and understand it!

Felt good. Even though it was basic, it’s more than I could do 3 months ago.

  29. Been studying for about 6 months and was able to pick up on what the characters were saying in an show I had on the other day! My listening skills are definitely lacking compared to my reading/writing so it was very exciting to me to be doing laundry and realize I knew what was happening in the show I had on as background noise.

  30. Two months ago I was starting on Kanji and terrified of that, just completely sure I’d never be able to remember a single one, and now I can identify about 200 words pretty easily. 🙂

Objectively not as much of a big deal as the really impressive stuff some other people are sharing (well done!!) for sure, but it still feels pretty huge to me. Especially since I’ve always struggled a lot with motivation and just studying by myself without some sort of outside guideline, or even just forming new habits in general. So knowing that I’ve not only stuck with doing something every day for five months now but am actually able to see progress from it too is really cool.

  31. The other day I successfully conveyed information to a Japanese person, in Japanese, for the first time. I feel slightly bad about it being done to correct his spelling of an English word, but he seemed appreciative in his reply at least.
