I’ve been looking for a bike since I got here, and everything seems to be those old fashioned ones with the basket on them, or very high end ones for enthusiasts.
Where can I get a regular, decent mountain bike for under 30,000 yen? I wouldn’t even mind if it was a quality secondhand. I really just want to get around my town and maybe a bit further on the weekends, without breaking the bank or looking like an old lady.

30,000 is really kinda the lowest end cutoff for getting a used merida or giant.
if you check sold yahoo auctions, they’re all hovering around 20-30k for entry level stuff.

For 30,000 and you want like an actual decent one you need to look at second hand ones.
At least that’s my perception of bicycles (used to ride racer and mountain back home).
30,000 is not necessary bad for a regular city bike but for a mountain bike you need to pay more.
If you are looking for a mountain bike under 30,000 then you probably aren’t looking for a real mountain bike. You won’t find anything “decent” for that price. Might get lucky online secondhand if you know what to look for.
Anything you see in those shops like bridge stone and Panasonic looking things I’d avoid. Asahi cycles sell giant but I’d avoid them too but it might be the closest thing you get, like 5万
If you just wanna ride it around the streets a cheap one will be good, but if you are actually going to the mountains on a cheap one, please for the love of god film it and post here if you live 🤡
Up until around ¥100,000 you won’t find a decent new bike from a reputable company. I’d recommend looking for a used one on yahoo auction or mercari. Trek, Specialized, Giant, Kona, Santa Cruz are all great.
As others have mentioned, 30,000 is not anywhere near a new mountain bike price. I bought my Merida at Asahi bikes and it was in the 70,000 range and it’s really nothing special but much better than a mamachari. I think when I looked they had a few in the 50,000 range but did not have a few features I wanted like hydraulic disc brakes so i upgraded a bit.
