Selling a vehicle yourself or using a dealer?

I am considering selling a vehicle I own and would like to know what the steps and processes are in terms of paperwork, what recommended websites/apps people have successfully used and is it even worth the trouble to do it on your own and better to just go through a dealer?

For those with experience please share your wisdom.

Thank you.

  1. If it’s a Skyline or a Supra I’ll buy it. Selling is hard, Japanese don’t buy a lot of used vehicles so unless you’re next to a military base with gaijin, they don’t care due to short stay in Japan, Japanese are picky with used cars. Selling to a dealership will get you about less than half of what you could get selling to a person.

  2. What kind of car are we talking here? Is it like a rare cool brand- new Mercedes or a 30 year old Kei-car?

  3. Speaking from personal experience, many Japanese are reluctant from buying used cars from foreigners. They usually back out when they meet you, or as soon as they realize that you aren’t Japanese.
Unless it is a rare/special/expensive car, I would use a dealer or sell it to other foreigners. Check out the facebook group for foreigners that live in your city.

If you sell it to someone that belongs to the USA military, the number plate will need to be converted, which involves additional bureaucracy when doing so.
