  1. Finally Japanese learners can learn the true beauty of Japanese with words like ポトフ, スマブラ, キチキチ, ファミチキ, もそもそ and シコる.

  2. ひらがなとカタカナ言葉ですか?バナナ言葉だけの方がいいですよ。

    例えば…バナナ…バナナ等価線量…バナナ共和国…バナナの皮…

  3. This is really helpful for me. I started learning with katakana but they’re not used practically anywhere in wanikani, so I’ve gotten super rusty with them.

Hopefully after the first 60 words test well they’ll include even more even quicker.

  4. I’ve been slowly working on going full burn in WK after completing level 60, happy with that I’d only have to deal with a new lesson every now and then if I keep at it… I hope they add an opt out for kana-only words, I’ve got enough in my anki deck

  5. Very exciting. I hope they add the rest of the core 10k – I’d be so happy to learn all that in a year.

  6. More ultra-basic stuff that you can’t skip? Wrong direction, folks. You keep turning away more advanced learners that like your system but don’t want to lose months SRSing numbers and days of the week, etc. Now you add mandatory “すみません”?Come on.

  7. I’m kind of bummed that they are doing them like radicals. I’d prefer to have to type the Japanese after seeing the word in English as well. It’s better for speaking recall.

  8. Hopefully this will be free for those who already have the full membership.

  9. Wanikani “We are a kanji-learning tool. The vocab is only to reinforce the kanji”

Also Wanikani “What about we add kana-only words?”

Well, it brings it closer to being a general vocabulary learning tool, but if they want to be one, they need to add more vocabulary as well, since they’re no longer just examples for the kanji.

Since I’m not using much besides WK for Japanese right now, this might actually be a great help to learn some more useful words. Edit: I take that back, I know almost all of them already.

  10. i am ok with it – if I have to know Napoleon the 3rd, I can know a few hiragana/katakana words

  11. I hate this update. I got about 15-20 minutes per day left to dedicate to Kanji practice after all my other activities and if Wanikani forces me to waste them on basic kana stuff like nai or ringo, it’s gonna become useless for me.

  12. It’s a nice addition, however in my eyes you should be able to toggle whether you want to practise non-kanji vocabs

  13. I just guru-ed Level 60, and they are hitting me with this crap? Not a good look for them, especially after their last update disaster.

  14. There’s a discussion thread on the WaniKani forums about this update: https://community.wanikani.com/t/kana-only-vocabulary-additions/61796

The reception has been mixed. Many people seem to welcome the addition, but there’s also a sizeable number of people that feel negatively about it. Most people seem to agree that WaniKani should make this new set of items optional in some way or another, especially if they’re going to add potentially thousands of vocab at some stage, as they mention in the announcement. I personally consider unlikely that tofugu will implement this as an optional feature though.

In my personal opinion, this (if they really add thousands of vocab) completely changes the mission statement of WaniKani to the point where I don’t feel it’s even the same app anymore. That may be a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s definitely a different thing.
