Have you tried the app kawaiiNihongo? If so, what were your thoughts on it?

I tried it for a bit yesterday and actually really liked it. I think having the manga style artwork be part of it made the learning experience seem more fun than, say, textbooks or such. The visuals kept me engaged. The grammar explanations seemed well done and were highly detailed.

Maybe a con would be that the first words it taught could be seen as random or not essential for daily beginner conversations. But that’s the only con I can think of right now, and if you use this app as a supplementary resource to other learning methods then I wouldn’t consider it a con anymore.

  1. I have a lifetime subscription to it and I like it. While I would not recommend using it as your sole resource, it does work great as a supplement. Additionally, while it may possibly not be as effective as other study apps, it is definitely more engaging and likely to keep you with a habit of studying, which is arguably more important. My main annoyance with it is that it keeps having daily goals to study Kana, even though I am way past that mentally. Also, make sure you have opted into the beta version of the application as it significantly better that the current official version.
