  1. So the reason this seems to be happening is:

    Because wives who are dependent on their husbands for social insurance must keep their annual salary under certain limits (ie <1.06M yen to get tax deductions, and <1.3M yen to not have to pay for health insurance and pension), the “system” aims to keep women’s salaries under these limits too. So it works for couples but not for single women who are stuck with these low salaries.

    This article mentions companies doing this but [another article from Asahi](https://www.asahi.com/sp/ajw/articles/14860036) showed that municipalities are doing this too.

    …and married women who are abused by their husbands have to choose to stay in that situation or become single and fall through the cracks of this system.

  2. Low paying jobs of less than 200,000 a month. Same as English teachers
