Options for moving to Kagawa

Hi All!

I’m looking to move to Kagawa ASAP.
I have girlfriend whom is Japanese, and currently resides in Kagawa. Her mother has recently fallen ill with something life threatening, though from my understanding things will be ok. Obviously this would cause anyone to become very stressed/depressed. So, I am looking to move to Kagawa to be with her and support her. This is something we have talked about together, and something she wants.

Usually, if such a scenario occurred I would stay with her as a tourist for the maximum allowed time (90 days?). But this is obviously impossible right now, with no ETA on tourism returning.
We are not married. So the only two options I can think of are coming in as a student or coming in with a work visa. Though coming in as a student would presumably need to line up with the academic calendar, it’s too late for April, so next would be October.
In terms of a work visa, my career is built within film and television. Kagawa being the tiny country prefecture that it is, doesn’t have a lot of options for me in that regard. So I expect a career change. Also my Japanese is pretty scuffed, I speak at an N5 level, but I am can read at an N4-N3 level, so I am pretty limited in my options.
\*as a side note, I am Australian – not sure if that changes anything in regards to covid and visas.

I would like to move to Kagawa quickly. So as someone who is completely unprepared, I am wondering if anyone has any advice at all. I’ll consider any option, as it’s pretty important that I be with her at this time.
I am expecting it to be impossible. If so, it is what it is. We both understand the challenges with me moving to Kagawa in such a timely manner.

I guess while I am here; any general advice for a move to Kagawa would be welcome (as it’s in inevitable move anyway)!

Cheers!

  1. Marriage by proxy or try to find an English teaching job. All your options will take 3 or more months time to complete.

  2. Advice for moving to Kagawa? Look up jobs in Shikoku or Kansai. Hopefully you can find an employer that would bring you in.

You have to be open to potentially not living in Kagawa. Being in a neighboring prefecture and seeing her on weekends still beats what you’re doing currently, but be aware that the move is going to be harsh on you, never mind jetting out to see her when you can.
