Found this thing that looks like a metal envelope. I guess it’s the blessing (anti-ghost-machine) for this storage building I’m renovating.
Just curious what other people do. Anyone ever frame the paper inside? I’m assuming there’s a paper inside and this is what this is.
It’s made of steel so if I want to open it I’m gonna scratch it all to hell straightening it out.
This building was a detached washitsu and it was behind the ceiling on the highest beam. I’m turning it into a workshop/garage type thing.
Edit: I opened it up and probably let the ghosts out

Date this building was added I guess, 1956

If this plastic bag is from 1956 I’m amazed. It looks like it could have came from the store yesterday.

I like finding cool old shit, so this made my day I guess 😎. I wish I had one from the main house. The neighbors think this house was built before the storage building (which might explain why it’s two lots with two addresses) and they used the date from the storage building to register everything bc that made taxes lower or something. So I have no idea how old my house actually is.

That looks like cocaine
House about to pay itself off
That’s pretty cool. I wonder what you’re actually supposed to do with it! Bring it to a shrine for disposal?
If the metal is kinda soft I think that’s lead, we had sheets of it wrapped around the storage shed thingy on our property when we got it
If you want to do it traditionally, it would be best to see if the local guiji (Shinto priest) can rid of the omamori.
Edit:
It looks like a Buddhism sutra. Just get rid of it or keep it. No harm was done.
Sell it on ebay with a fancy story, the vindictive spirits will be someone elses problem
That’s very cool! I’ve always wanted to see what was inside one of those anti ghost things. Thanks for sharing!
If you’re asking what *I* do with them: I leave them *alone* so I don’t upset the gods!
So you’ve just uncovered a mini copy of the Lotus sutra. It’s not uncommon at all to find these in the attics/rafters of old houses. You can leave it or toss it; juju does not exist so nothing bad will happen either way. But you did just post your address on the internet for everyone to see so you might want to remove some of those images for your own privacy.
throw it away, if the next day it shows up at your house again then it’s haunted or possessed by an evil entity.
I would put it back but before doing so add some small figurines of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the other one so that western culture is represented too.
What a cool little folklore find!
I say go ahead and do what you want with it, but I’d probably keep it in honour of those who put it there in the first place.
I’m not particularly superstitious, but I love myself a good tale and stuff like what you found is a real gem in my opinion.
Where I’m from, there’s lots of little traditions the old folk abide by that you’ll miss if you blink. For example, what to do / not to do so you don’t get your name wrote in the fairies’ book, sort of thing.
My mother got herself a cottage some years back and there were old crucifixes hanging over most doorframes. She’s not a believer, but she said something along the lines of “I’m not trying to catch any ire from the old spirits of this place,” so she left most of them up or, like, gathered them and stored them safe.
That’s pretty cool.
You could put it back when you’re finished renovating if you want the anti-fire, earthquake magic, or you could just keep it and buy a new one at the shrine?
Ideally you should have left this in place and not touched it. It was clearly placed in such a way as to last a very long time, if not for the lifetime of the building itself.
As you have removed it, you should probably take it to a shrine or temple, explain the situation, and ask how best to remedy your interference. This will probably involve replacing it with a similar new one.
Damn, did not expect a desecration! A rare sight to see as no Japanese person would have ever done this.
You have to burn it.
That’s how it works in most stories anyway.
What an awesome find, thank you for sharing this!! I say hold on to it. Even if it no longer works on the ghosts, it’s a really cool little piece of history! lol.
The first ep of Yami Shibai gives the answer.
Hah this the plot to a horror film, move it buddy and things aren’t gonna turn out well for you.
