Any genre of interest in particular? There’s the Nobunaga’s Ambition series of strategy games, there are 2 Yakuza series spinoffs which are set around that time and various other action or RPG games which are set during that time period.
Off the top of my head..
TW Shogun 2
Ghost of tsushima
Sekiro
Forgetting many, I’m sure
Way of the Samurai, I remember all of them being pretty good.
Total war shogun 2
GoT. Sakero. Nero 1 and 2. (Assassin Creed latest this year)
Ghost of Tsushima or Sekiro.
Title doesn’t say it all at all — do you want VIDEO games? Card games? Board games? A time machine and the instructions for tag?
I am a simple Romanian who is in love with your culture, so I will give you my top 5 Japanese games:
5. Total War Shogun 2: high strategy – you play as a ruler on a map, but you also can choose to play manually every battle – historical detail is pretty neat, you actually learn strategic warfare
4. Way of the Samurai 3: RPGs – you play as a samurai – you can see some aspects of medieval life in Japan – it’s pretty old but it has a lot of soul
3. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun: a lovely JRPG – you play as a group, with each individual having their own purpose and skills – it has a unique gameplay style, i loved it (if you are into cowboys, try Desperado III, it’s made by the same guys)
2. Ghost of Tsushima: a modern RPG – probably the game you are looking for – it has a fun combat style, cute story, and also gives a look under Japanese life during the Mongol invasion.
1. Sekiro: fantasy RPG – I belive that this game has the best sword combat ever made in video games – it is set during the Sengoku era but has magical elements – it is pretty tough, but you are not a Samurai in this game, you are a Shinobi, you can always use stealth, planning and the tools at your disposal to get out of a situation.
Have fun! It would be lovely if you would some day come back to this post and tell us about your experience!
Ghost of Tsushima, one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Ghost of tsushima and Like a Dragon Ishin. Both great and set in feudal japan but both different types of games.
Shogun 2 Total war!! Nioh 1-2! Sekiro! Wish I could remember that new one that takes place Late Edo period where you are part of the Yakuza or something. Not feudal but Edo Period can have the same vibe. It’s a very unique period.
Really can’t go wrong with any Samurai Warriors. Ghost of Tsushima has to be one of the best.
How far back do you want to go?
If you have emulators check out:
• Tenchu: Shadow Assassins (psx)
• Bushido Blade (psx)
• The Way of the Samurai (PS2)
• Onimusha (first 3 games)
Shiren the wanderer. Fun fact: if you are a rice ball , a rotten trap will kill you… the programmers thought of everything.
Ghost of Tsushima Like a Dragon Ishin
The Sengoku Musou series…
EDIT: also known as Samurai Warriors…5 is the latest one…
