My apartment charges money for a bicycle spot. I don’t want to ask to draw attention to it, but has anyone gotten yelled at for storing their bicycle on their balcony?
If your balcony is an escape route, then they will argue it’s a safety hazard.
How much are they charging? Everywhere I’ve lived in Tokyo has been 300 yen or less per month.
I think taking your bike up to your apartment will be more the issue than where you store it. Whether you can store it on your balcony depends on the building bylaws.
Check your tenant contract. If there is nothing written about it with the exception of blocking the escape ladder, then it should be fair game
Why not have it in your house? Like on a wall? No way I am leaving my bikes outside just because people here think bikes are mamacharis.
I think, if there are any complaints, it would be more towards moving the bicycle through common spaces (eg: common corridors, stairwells, elevators) causing obstruction or inconvenience to other residents; or worse, leaving behind tracks or scruffs along the way over time.
Might be fine if you live on the ground floor, but any other level might depend on your exact living arrangements… Unless you have a (bike) bag to put it into each and every time you take it in/out of your room.
A friend in Tokyo keeps his expensive bike on the balcony with no issues. So put one down for, does it and does not get yelled at.
