Crocs as indoor footwear?

Hi there!

This August I will be moving to Japan to study at uni there for 11 months; and part of my packing list includes a pair of indoor slippers!

I absolutely love my crocs and would really like to bring a pair with me as my indoor shoes if this is culturally acceptable! Is this the case? Or are they too “outdoorsy” to be considered indoor-wear? 🙂

  2. It only is this acceptable, many gyms and companies use crocs or crocs like shoes as standard indoor slippers.

  3. Yes, it’s acceptable as long as you keep them as indoor shoes. However some hospitals don’t allow them on their staff so if your study involves hospitals you might want to ask in advance. (apparently multiple people fell because crocs give you too much traction on typical hospital floors).

  4. Crocs are incredibly popular, you can buy all manner of colourful and character design ones (some knockoffs of Crocs though) at places like Donki.

  5. Just a caveat to this, Crocs are common indoors for places with wood, tile, carpet and the like. if the flooring is tatami they may want you to wear something softer on bottom than crocs. Usually just wearing your socks is acceptable.

  6. It all depends on how it affects the floor below you. In an office building it’ll be no problem because people walking above can’t be heard, but in a cheap apartment, you might find that people below you will complain because they are too loud.

As far as looks go it’s no problem

Of course when there is tatami involved, no slippers are acceptable at all. Just bare feet or socks
