I would like to use a Ubiquiti router in Japan

Hey guys!

I looked up both on English and Japanese websites (Especially the 掲示板 ones) as well as this [previous thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/fij0je/internet_for_homeserver_and_own_router/) and [wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/internet/) but I couldn’t find any relevant information on how to set a Ubiquiti router at my place in Japan. My current situation is as it follows:

* Living in Tokyo, less than 1km away from a NTT station/relay
* Subscribed to FTTH NTT East Cross (10 Gbps) along with AsahiNet on a condominium
* Using the XG-100NE router (or home gateway as they say) from NTT East
* No option to have a fixed IP address at the moment (I’ll use DDNS as a workaround)
* Using IPv4 and IPv6 both through IPoE

Since the IPoE settings were automatic and I got connected right away once I set my router, I am a bit unsure if a Ubiquiti router compatible with the way IPoE is set up. In the case where Ubiquiti wouldn’t be compatible, is there any routers you would like to recommend?

  1. 1. Cross requires IPoE as you probably knew, only 2 providers do pppoe over 10gb and only one of them is for non-companies.
    2. Ubuiquity isn’t going to implement support for any J-standards anytime soon. They’ve had a thread up for at least 3 years: https://community.ui.com/questions/Feature-Request-IPv4-over-IPv6-in-Japan-using-IPOE-MAP-E-or-DS-LITE-etc-/452a1bbf-6880-4cc9-9c75-fae87ff68ca4 and no official response.

I see a post that someone has wasted time to get it working with MAP-E (so you’d have to change providers) here: https://tech.guitarrapc.com/entry/2020/10/17/044555 [edit: looks like they’re just placing UDM behind HGW, too lazy to read further. probably not what you want to do]

As for recommendation, if you want something that can really make use of 10gb traffic, I recommend Yamaha RTX1300. For a bit more consumer-ish device with integrated wifi, Buffalo WSR AX12 series has 10gb port for internet and LAN.

  2. You may find some guides for getting it working on a edgerouter but stay away from unifi stuff. Better just to stay away from ubiquiti edge devices. Look at bloggie2’s hw recommendations.
