Health check

Is it required by law (or strongly recommended other than for health reasons) to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth on the pre-health check (健康診断) forms?

  1. It will probably come up during your health check, so might as well let them know.

  2. The whole truth? I don’t know about that. If they have a box for previous injuries, you don’t have to tell them about the time when you were a small child that you kicked your sister in the face and broke your toe. So it’s not like you need to disclose your complete medical history. There’s not enough room on the form for that, and most of it isn’t relevant. Just be reasonable.

I think most people most of the time would be well advised to tell the truth to their doctors, especially if there’s the potential for the company that paid for the health check to find out later. But hey, you know your own circumstances better than us.

  3. If something health related happens related to what you lied about it might make your insurance null and void. Which might be pricey. Don’t they just usually ask things about how fast you eat though? If it’s about smoking, then that would probably be risky to lie about.

  4. I lie to my company before the annual health check.

I take several medications daily which I have no intention of sharing with my company or the shitty 産業医 who looks like he should have retired 20 years ago.

Outside of work, I would never lie or leave out relevant information though.
