What were your best camping trips?

Please suggest the best camping experience you had! Preferably mountains, beaches not too far from Tokyo. I want to go for camping in summer.

  1. I hiked to the top of a mountain in Nagano with my dog and just strapped my tent to my bag and made a weekend of it. It was epic.

  2. The best must have been my parents living room when I was, like, five.

You’re probably asking about actual outdoors though… well some are going great as close as a park in Shinjuku (oddly elderly) and some as far as the last inhabited island, Iriomote (oddly hippies). So I guess anything goes!

  3. For summer, above 1500m is cool. Best hiking in Kamikochi for me, stay a few days. Also do a night in Oze. Both are great experiences.

  4. Kamikochi has lots of campgrounds but is very busy. Just pick a mountain with a hut/camping spot close by.

Also just a heads up, wild camping is not allowed in national parks, that includes most bigger peaks in the alps.

  5. I’m single, so no kids to worry about, and I know loads of deep-mountain disused logging roads thanks to my deer hunting here. I just take a friend or two in my 4×4 up to some disused turning circle for the logging trucks and we have a blast. Miles from any people, tons and tons of wood to burn, fresh mountain air, cold mountain streams….way better than any Japanese campsite with all their silly rules and annoying people close to you.

  6. Not too far from Tokyo might be too hot for camping in summer? And mozzies . . .
