Folks whom have climbed Fuji; how difficult was it?

I live in a moderately hilly area in northern pa and I want to know how difficult it was for you. My plan is to climb Fuji sometime next year for a memorial walk for my father who passed in April of 21. His last regret was not going back to Japan. My plan is to follow his foot steps and climb mnt Fuji as a lasting memory of something I was not allowed to do while he was away during my childhood. It’s a bucket list item and something I plan to grind for to meet the goal no matter the pain.
What should I prepare for?
How would you have planned differently had you known what was in front of you?
Any advice on this will be helpful to meet my goal.

  2. If you’re a regular hiker it’s a relatively easy hike. Back when I climbed it I didn’t even hike that much and it was no problem. We hiked it as a dayhike, which is more tiring.

    If you’re not used to exercise and hiking stay at a hut and split it into two days.

    Tips for when you go:
    1) It’s cold year round and if it rains you’ll need rain pants and jacket. Because it’s not a difficult hike people forget it’s still a high mountain. Bring proper gear. Huts will not let you rest inside unless you have a reservation to stay.

    2) Book your hut early, they book out quickly.

    3) Unless you’re an experienced hiker, start low hikes now. Elevation gain is about 1500m depending on which route you take. See how you do with 1000m elevation gain and then train accordingly.

    4) People always complain of altitude sickness, I would worry more about drinking enough water. Majority is probably severely dehydrated and exhausted because their not used to physical exercise.

    5) We rented a car and then stayed an extra night in the area. That way you don’t have to travel much after the hike and can rest.

    6) Yamap is an amazing free map/hiking app. It has all the trail up to Fuji and GPS tracking. You can use it on chrome with google translate. The app is partly in Japanese but enough is in English to be able to figure out how it works.
