This was discussed before [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/twn7b8/online_visa_renewal_system/) but since this post is archived, I cannot comment on it and ask. Hence, I make a new post.
When installing JPKI to go through the online visa renewal system, quite a lot of stuff in that app is not UTF-8 encoded. Which results in rather comical windows like this: [https://bashify.io/images/HP02zi](https://bashify.io/images/HP02zi)
Is there a workaround for this? Im on windows 11. I managed to blindly click me through the process and it looks like its working but some settings later have the same issue.
What is the encoding and what I can do to get correct readings?

You need to change your “Language for non-Unicode programs” to Japanese.
Also Windows use UTF-16, not UTF-8.
You can change non-unicode app locale to Japanese in control panel, or you can use a locale emulator: https://xupefei.github.io/Locale-Emulator/
However locale changing is probably the better solution.
locale emulator worked fine for me, though the app will install properly if you run as admin and blindly click through.
