Masters in Japan vs UK?

Hello, apologies for any bad formatting. Currently on mobile.

This is mainly just a question for advice as I’m a bit stuck with making a decision for my future.

For context, since I was young I have been wanting to move to Japan and will be in a position to do so after I finish my bachelors (at least). I do want to get a Masters, likely in Global/Regional studies and have seen Universities offer that in Japan.

My main question is how much would a Masters from a Japanese give me an advantage compared to one in the UK? The cost of the tuition is not something that worries me (would pay out of pocket, but also looking into scholarships such as MEXT), but more so am I just as likely to get a job in Japan in a related field as I am with studying in the UK?

In regards to language, I am studying Japanese alongside as part of my undergrad degree, so I do aim to be at N3/2 level by the time I finish my degree (with a year abroad included in that).

To add, while it is my dream to live in Japan, I am not in a rush like some people may think. I am aware a lot of things can take time and it is not something you can do on a whim, that’s I am asking these questions now so I am able to prepare and be ready when the time comes.

Hope that all makes sense! Thanks!

  2. It’s a gamble whether you can be fluent in Japanese a year before you graduate or not. If you can be fluent, then you can interview for a job as a new graduate (the job hunting season is one year before you graduate). If you can’t then you either teach English (which you don’t even need a Masters for) or you graduate and go home.

I’m not even sure what job a “Global Studies” major would do. You may or may not need a Masters, but you definitely need to be fluent in Japanese.

N3 isn’t going to cut it. Some jobs may list N2 as the minimum but having N2 isn’t enough for a Japanese work environment.
