Any fitness people here? how tf do i get cheaper peanut butter?

The pb here is so small for like 300-600 en a jar. I need to gain weight and eat more protein and i struggle hitting my reccomended protein and calorie amount for the day, so i use peanut butter to help get there. I go thru the small jars in like 3-4 days. I got a bigger jar for about 1000 en and hoped it would last me longer but it lasted me about a week.
Im a college kid and disabled so i cant really be dropping 8 dollars a week on peanut butter. Does anyone have any good bulk stores or something where i can get larger containers?

As a side question how do you gym people get enough protein here. Im STRUGGLING. Any secret high protein foods i dont know about?

  1. This seems like a post about shopping, maybe your question is solved by [the wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/shopping)?

  2. Skip all the sugar, eat lots of peanuts? They are cheap especially at Gyomu Super, 1kg packages at Donki, Mr Max, Trial etc.

  3. What I’ve been doing for the last like 5 years is just to eat meat for dinner, double protein shake and then just junk food.

E.g. chicken breast for dinner, double protein shake after workout is already 110g.. if you’re bulking it shouldn’t be too hard to get the remaining bit through other foods. What’s ur goal? No need to shoot too high either. I’ve been slacking off a bit and doing like 150-160g and havent had any issues. Back in college I was eating like 200.

There’s not a lot of options here for high calorie high protein non-filling food. In Europe there’s a lot of whole foods etc that add up to a decent chunk of protein but in Japan the recipes for these haven’t been faxed over yet I guess.

  4. I use protein shakes to hit my protein targets. 2 a day. Veggies, meat, oatmeal as well. Put one of the protein powder servings in the oatmeal with almond milk.

  5. I think PB is more for healthy fat than protein? Same as almond, cashews, walnut, etc. Good for your bulking.

Will you consider pea protein powder? The taste is not for everyone though so you better try first. The one I get from Amazon costs less than 3,400 yen for 1kg pack.

For food I eat these chicken breast/tender, canned tuna (get the one without oil and salt), brocoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, nanohana, eggs, cheese, etc. Personally I don’t think I digest lentils well but boiled chickpeas is high protein too, you can try.

    Good luck!

  6. Try Amazon, that’s where I get mine. All natural PB from Kanpy (1kg bag) or Youki (400g jar). Reasonably priced compared with the sweet, palm oil infused stuff. That being said, it’s a lot of fat calories to intake in order to get to those proteins.

  7. I can hit 115ish with:

    – overnight oats with a serving of protein powder mixed in
    – miso soup with a block of tofu
    – 2x 12g protein oikos (the non-sugar ones)
    – rice, natto, an egg, can of sea chicken (don’t judge me, I don’t like cooking so I just mix it all up and add soy sauce or furikake lol)

My tip is to eat natto and tofu if you are living in Japan because it is very cheap. Oatmeal is great too and sometimes I see OK super has 1kg for 300ish yen but its more like 1000 if you buy it on Amazon. I love oikos but in comparison it’s a bit on the expensive side.

  8. You don’t, I dropped the peanut butter like a year and a half ago when it crossed a psycholical threshold that I thought was completely unreasonable.

  9. I eat a minimum of 170g of protein per day, and I do that on a calorie deficit. If I can do it on a deficit, you can do it on a bulk. I am a student, so I am not exactly rich.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, chicken breast is a great option. I use ground chicken breast personally. They also have decent protein powder here with low calories and high protein, such as ”Weight Loss” by Savas – found in supermarkets.

Peanut butter is alright but I would save my money and buy something else. Roasted Soybeans are cheap and contain a ridiculous amount of protein, I am talking closer to 40g per 100g. Sure it stimulates estrogen but if you eat it with moderation I am sure it is no issue.

Another way is to learn about nutrition and understand that your options are basically endless and that you can save money by making smart choices. Don’t be a ”want to have the cake but also eat it” kind of guy.

  10. Order raw peanuts on amazon or even cheaper on some nuts site.

    Grind them yourself.

    Enjoy.
