May I legally remove a swallow nest?

I live in a 4 unit apartment and swallows have taken to building a nest on the entrance light fixture (again). Two days ago someone, my neighbours perhaps, have taped a piece of cardboard on the floor under it – what purpose that’s supposed to serve is anyone’s guess, but the nest is still there.

Apparently my wife has called the manager but they’re busy with… many calls of the same nature. So someone might come, or might not… I’m not willing to wait until the little twits have laid eggs to terrorise my sleep early in the morning, so can I legally remove the nest?

Don’t get me wrong, I like birds, but I like not waking up at 4AM more.

Only if it’s YOUR property and if there are no chicks or eggs in the nest. They’re otherwise protected under the Wildlife Protection and Management Law.

So as a renter – you can’t legally touch it. And if they lay eggs before the management company comes, you’re stuck with it until the chicks have grown and left the nest.

To catch bird poop. Easier than trying to scrub the walkway later.

    That’s heavier than I expected.

  2. If swallows built a nest on my balcony I’d be so happy. I imagine the view from the window deters them. 🙁

But, no, you can’t move it. The cardboard is to catch their poop, feathers and siblings.

  3. My neighbors have swallows that nest in their carport each year. They patiently cover their car hood with a tarp to catch the poop for the month or two the birds are there. The pooping intensifies when the chicks hatch and grow.

I thought my neighbors were just kind-hearted but my husband told me it’s illegal to remove them.

It’s really cool to see the chicks start flying practice, and then after a few days the whole family moves out. This just happened in our area so maybe yours will finish up and move along soon too.

  4. Make some kind of little stair way to the nest, get a cat or find one 🤔

To counter the effect that gravity has on bird poop

    Hmmm?

Anecdotal but in my inaka it is said that tsubame returning to nest every year is a good sign, that they come find shelter here because the habitants are nice humans. People here even put nets around so the nests don’t get bothered by crows etc

  6. I believe it’s bad luck … what would you do with the nest and the babies?

the cardboard is for the.bird poop
