  1. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/18/as-g7-leaders-start-to-arrive-japan-pm-prepares-push-in-hiroshima-for-nuclear-weapons-pledge) reduced by 83%. (I’m a bot)

    > The war in Ukraine and Chinese aggression towards Taiwan will dominate G7 discussions this week, but host Fumio Kishida is expected to carve out time to push for a pledge on nuclear weapons when leaders meet in Hiroshima, the first place on Earth targeted by an atomic bomb.

    > In the run-up to the summit, Kishida spoke of his desire for "a world without nuclear weapons", although campaigners point to the failure by Japan – part of the US nuclear umbrella – to sign a 2021 UN treaty banning the possession and use of nuclear weapons.

    > Pressure is building for a reference to nuclear weapons, with the UN secretary general, António Guterres, this week calling on the G7 leaders to declare they will not use nuclear weapons "In any circumstances".

  2. It’s sad but after Ukraine nobody in their right mind will abolish their arsenal of nuclear weapons. After the Cold War they got rid of theirs and we all know what happened next. Yes, Ukraine did not have the full launch infrastructure and possibly could never have used it. But that is not what most people see and they demand a first of second strike capability.

  3. Nuclear weapons act as a deterrent though. And the cat is out of the bag. There’s no going back to pre nuclear age.

  4. Well good luck with that Japan, considering the state of the world right now.

  5. Nuclear weapons are the reason why we never had ww3, as Albert Einstein once said: “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones”.
