Recommendations for a Oven

After a long time without an oven, I want to invest in one of those fancy microwave/convection oven combos so I can get back into making bread, pizza, roasts etc.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a good model around 50k? Also, to those who have one with a convection function, is it worth the premium? Especially as I am thinking about getting an air fryer in the future.

  1. I have one and I use the convection more than I use the microwave. It’s big enough to hold the chicken, but there’s no way you’re getting a turkey in there, even if you can find a turkey in Japan

  2. We have a Toshiba ER-VD70. It works great, though for someone who grew up with ovens that only had a temperature control(and maybe a broken clock) it has a huge amount of buttons but easy enough to learn the basics of how it works.

Works great for baking hamburger buns, pizza, pies, cookies etc… Though I have a cheap metal rack I put on the bottom that the baking sheet sits on to help avoid burning. And it will fit a 6-7kg turkey if that is something you are interested in.

  3. Be weary of the ‘smart’ ones, especially ones that ‘microwave’ with steam – some of them just give you soggy hot food and can’t calculate a good time/temperature despite how much they claim they do. So, either your food is burnt or needs manual input most of the time. They’re still nice for baking and general microwave use, just don’t expect it to actually be ‘smart’. Source: have lived in two different houses with them (both 80k+)

  4. I use a Hitachi MRO -S7Z, had no problems with it.

It’s fairly compact, roasts/bakes/grills evenly and is easy to clean.

  5. Iris ohyama has simple no bullshit oven (temp., time, fan-off/on, just 3 knobs). I’ve the cheapest one, found on mercari for 8000 yen.

One great thing about those is that they can keep 250C indefinitely. Most other oven can only go to 250C for 10min before throttling down to 230 or less (even in your price range).

  6. We have a Panasonic Bistro that we’ve used every day for over 4 years – for ‘steam toast’ in the mornings, as a microwave for bento stuff/reheating/thawing, as an oven for roast/quiche/pizza/cookies/cakes etc and as a grill for atsuage, pizza toast, etc.

It works best with one tray however we regularly use two trays with two pizzas and just switch them around. It actually takes 3 trays but I don’t think anything would cook if we did that?

I also use it to hardboil eggs (!) and do onsen tamago – it’s super easy to whack them in and come back when it dings.

On re-reading your post i have a feeling we planned to buy a 5man model but after talking to the yamada denki staff were upsold to ours which was about 70 or 80K. (I think it’s convection? It has a fan ?) I have a feeling it may’ve been a little cheaper as it was ‘last year’s model’.

& I’ve considered getting an air fryer too however i think most things can be done in the Bistro 🙂

  7. We have had a Hitachi for 11 years. Not one problem. Going to buy another just to upgrade next month and will be getting another Hitachi!
