Good time to submit a PR application?

Hey Japanlife,

With all the happy times in Japan I’ve had I am looking and really excited to apply for permanent residency as early as it possible for me so that I can get it early and stop worrying about visas or work contracts or other things that are not that exciting to think about.

I’m currently here on a HSFP visa with 80+ points. I have a confirmation letter from the ISA certifying my points.

My 12 months or residency in Japan will trigger on around September 1st, 2023 and at that time I’ll become eligible for permanent residency.

I’ve noted from the earlier threads that, because it takes quite a while to process PR, people apply on their 10th or 11th month so that their application gets accepted before their 12 month mark and gets approved after.

Is this still correct? And what would be a good time to apply in this case? Middle of July – early August?

Thank you all!

  1. You seem to be suggesting that you’re on a twelve-month visa? If that’s the case, you aren’t able to apply for PR at this stage. You’ll have to extend your current visa and hope they give you a 3 or 5-year one next time around, which opens that door.

Disregard all that if my assumption is incorrect.

  2. Japan loves their rules. I understand the part of wanting it as quickly as possible, but if that’s gonna be the reason your application is rejected, you’re PR is even further away.

Unless there is a reason you really can’t wait a month longer, I personally would play it safe. You can already start collecting the required documents (but note that some cannot be older than 3 months at time of submission).

  3. I’m pretty sure

    doesn’t work like that.

  4. My immigration office has a pre document check. They won’t even let you take a ticket to get in line to submit it to immigration if you don’t already meet the 1 or 3 year rule.
