Hello japanlife hivemind!
My SO and I are moving in a new rented flat tomorrow morning. We visited the place several times, an apartment from the 90s in a very good condition on the 3rd floor of a complex. We didn’t see a single critter of any sort during the visits and the kitchen, genkan and bathroom were as clean as it can be.
Now out of the blue, SO wants to call pest Control for a “prevention” fumigation in the early morning.
This is really stressing me out as the actual move will start from early afternoon and we have a pet cat. I think it’s a waste of money and potentially hazardous for a very small gain (if any).
Am I paranoid or are we just going to throw money for no value ?

I wouldn’t worry about it being a potentially hazard but definitely a waste of money. It’s not like the pest prevention is permanent why even bother.
Well, happy wife, happy life. But I would let the pest people know that a cat is going to be there the same day, just to make sure that they don’t spray anything harmful preventatively.
Not sure if you need pest control but I’d at least do a bug bomb just in case. Since there’s nothing in the rooms before you move in, you don’t need to cover your furniture etc. We used them before moving into a new house and ended up with less than 5 dead bugs on the floor.
Take a look at バルサン火を使わない水タイプ. You only need to use a bit of water to set it off.
Personally I would get the fumigation, but see if it can be done the day before.
Isnt the cat your pest control?
