This is certainly an odd question, and I wasn’t sure where to post! I read the sidebar and I think this is the best sub to post, but if not – please remove!
[Edit: I should’ve labeled the post, “Japanese Home architecture.” Forgive me!]
I’ve fallen in love in with Japanese homes. I mean, wow – are they gorgeous! I have been looking at Japanese homes and It would be so nice to live in such a convenient, efficient, and functional home!
With that said, I was wondering if they are other countries in which the house interior is similar? I love the concept of walking in, taking off my shoes, and having a half bathroom (or water closet), separate sink, laundry room, then bathing room upon entry of the home!
I certainly understand if you’re rich enough, you could certainly build a Japanese styled home anywhere in the world – but I wanted to know if the styling of Japanese homes is unique to Japan, or if other countries have similar concepts?
All Thanks 🙂

What you need is just a normal house with a shoe cloak at the entrance and an Italian shower room with a bathtub. Japanese houses are not particularly fancy actually.
Cookie cutter Japanese houses aren’t that great.
The walls are thin, insulation is poor and they are not built to last. They’re built to last about 20-30 years to the be torn down and rebuild.
New Zealand houses are kinda similar with what you mentioned. People always take off their shoes when they enter a house, the toilet is in a seperate room to the bathroom and there’s usually a seperate laundry room too. There isn’t like a proper genkan area with a step up in most kiwi homes but you could easily add that if you built a house here. Building your own house is very common here too, I heard it’s not so common in America but it’s usually cheaper to build than to buy here.
Check out the book “A Japanese Touch for your Home,” you might like its approach of introducing even small aspects of this kind of living style to Western apartments/houses.
