Hellotalk vs Tandem

My level is around N4. Which app is the best for chatting with japanese people?

  1. Hello talk is better but has become really expensive for pro features the past few years. It’s a Chinese app to with questionable censorship and banning. Plus as a platform people tend to use it as a regular SNS and post like twitter which can be annoying. I’ve made good friends though and had positive feedback on my writing etc. I just don’t use it anymore due to the politics and meh don’t need it tbh. Tandem is a lot more bare bones

  2. I’ve made a handful of friends on Hello Talk. I found it easier to relate to people since they have a Twitter-like SNS post feature. Anyone can like/comment, and it was just a nice way to foster friendships after the inital “Hi, Hello” chat introductions.

Tandem was alright, but I found it much harder to make relations since it felt more formal, if that makes sense. You can set your active app usage times, and which type of interactions you prefer (eg. chat only, call and chat, no video chat, etc) From what I recall, they had no SNS type posting system, but they could have changed it? Been years since I last used these language exchange apps.

They’ve got their pros and cons, I think it wouldn’t hurt to try both!
