Flew from Osaka to Okinawa for short beach holiday: beaches are deserted, rental car firm gave nice discount

Now is the time to go to the beach in Okinawa. There’s no one around. We rented a house on the beach in the middle part of the island not far from Onna. The sand is white, the water is clear and very clean. No crowds. In fact we didn’t see a single person on the beach.

We flew on ANA from Osaka Itami airport on a packed flight because ANA is not flying the wide body jets yet and they cut down on the number of flights. If you’re afraid to be cramped into a small cabin, don’t fly. Everyone had masks, talking was strongly discouraged, no food, only cold green tea.

We rented a convertible Mazda Miata from Times Rent a Car. The car rental had only 2 other customers. Airport was very quiet.

  1. Only useful if you’re actually already in the country. Virtually all international travel into Japan is prohibited. For those that actually can get in there is a 14 day quarantine period.

  2. Only if I can mask the fact that I’m travelling from Tokyo. (Technically people from Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Hokkaido aren’t supposed to cross prefectural borders, at least until 6/19 as per govt. guidelines, right?)

On the other hand, if you’re already in Japan, Shinkansen and train travel shouldn’t be as cramped since they haven’t drastically cut down services like airplanes. (That being said, Okinawa is obviously not reachable by train haha)

  3. Didn’t the Okinawan government beg tourists not to visit right now? And the Japanese government is asking people to refrain from inter prefectural travel. Just because the State of Emergency is lifted doesn’t mean the Rona is over.

It’s one thing to make a choice about the risk you are willing to take–and inflict on others. It’s another to encourage risky behavior to others on social media.
