日本人の知らない日本語 has anyone read it?

Can it be useful for a foreigner learning Japanese? It clearly seems focused on the Japanese themselves. any reviews?

  1. I have read some of it. Any reading practice is good practice but I wouldn’t describe any of the topics they go over as “important”. Its stuff like “why do they use this kanji for this specific kind of fish”.

  2. I’ve read it. The topics are funny and insightful, but geared towards Japanese-natives approaching the perspective of Japanese-learners for the first time.

Perhaps because of the author’s educational background, however, it’s a fairly decent read even at a high N2 without too many challenges not addressed immediately in the text.

I will also say I was not a fan of the live-action TV version they made some years back. Too many changes to the characters and plot to make it adhere to J-drama formula.

  3. I read the first two books and thought it was interesting to read about the teacher perspective at a language school. It includes comic essays with furigana, 1-2-page written essays without furigana and some yonkoma strips inbetween.

I read both books after I had already passed the N2 and although the explanations about characteristics of the Japanese language didn’t really help with my studies, personally I still found them good to know.

    [I wrote a detailed review here](https://dokushoclub.com/2022/05/09/n2-shiranai-nihongo/).

  4. i didnt know there was a book but the drama taught me a few things. i watched it on youtube.
