Using someone else’s car 🚗

Hey guys, so my Japanese friend (older guy) has said to me probably that I can use/borrow his car. I say probably because my Japanese level only allows for so much understanding.

I think he said that because he’s insured, other driver’s can use his car. I did a bit of research online but couldn’t find any useful information.

Therefore, is anyone knowledgeable about this? What is the legislation around “named drivers” in Japan? Would I need to take out my own insurance? How does it work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 👍 Thank you.

  1. His insurance either has third-party coverage or not. Ask to see his insurance policy.

  2. When you take an insurance policy here, it has coverage for a) driver only, b) family only or c) Anyone. There some other options as well like 25 years and up, or 30 years and up.

If you don’t trust your friend to remember what he signed up for you can purchase 1-day car insurance from the machines at 7-11 (and probably other conbinis too).

  3. I would ask for a copy of his insurance, and look it over for myself. It would probably be a good idea to have a copy on hand anyway, just in case.

Perhaps I’m overly caution, but I would probably also try to put together some simple documentation showing that he has given me permission to drive the vehicle as well, and have it together with a copy of the insurance papers when using the vehicle.

  4. Before you do anything else, make sure he definitely, not probably, said you can use his car.
