Wallet stolen – how to replace residence card online?

I have reported my wallet stolen and the police gave me the temporary ID paperwork. Google searches suggest that I need to go into the immigration office to get the card replaced in person. Is there any way to get it reissued online?

  1. Sounds like a really bad experience. Unfortunately things like this are handled in person only.

  2. I had my residence card remade recently (it was damaged and the name couldn’t be read), doesn’t take too long but you do need to visit the Immigration Information Center

p.s. Make sure to get there as early as possible to avoid longer wait times

  3. No u cant do it online. I lost my wallet last winter with all the atm catds and ics. Remember u need to to get the letter 遺失届出証明書 from the nearest police station and bring it to the immigration centre. U will get ur card within half a day depending on the crowdness.

  4. Sadly it’s another one of the silly convoluted systems Japan makes you handle in person, but it’s not so bad from what my wife says it should only take a short time to get it reissued.

  5. 10 years in Japan. I lost it twice because I got wasted and had new ones reissued at the immigration bureau without any problem beside shitty times in Shinagawa. However I had my wallet stolen during a business trip in Hawaii, and that was the 3rd strike. I had the immigration officer scolding me like a child in front of everyone after waiting 2/3 hours for nothing, had to go get some obscure certification from my ward’s police station and then return on the next day and lose another afternoon. So be careful, it’s on your record forever and they do mind. I only carry my driver’s license and leave the zairyu card at home now.
