I was shocked how much my gas bill is each month. I live with my wife in a 2LDK and its just us two. We both dont overly use things unnecessarily and I feel like our bills for things like water, gas and electricity are absurd. I was living alone in a 1LDK before we moved in together and it was about 1/4 of the price. How can 2 people all of a sudden use almost 4 times the amount of energy?

Water is ¥3,500.
2LDK for two people, our gas has stayed around 6500-7000 per month for the last few months. Electric is about 5,000. Water is about 8,000 per two months.
It could be that you’re on a bad plan. You might want to try contacting your provider and seeing if there are other options. Alternatively, see if switching providers (where possible) might help.
Also, if you worked at the office before but now work from home (or both of you), then you’d be using that much more electricity (for lights and running your PCs), gas (maybe cooking more instead eating out on the way back from work) and water (going to the toilet, washing your hands etc. that many more times when that would usually all be done at work free of charge to you).
Just some ideas! Other than that I have no idea 🙂

Gas ¥3000~¥4000, Water (Every 2 Months) ¥3500, Electric ¥3000
Electricity used to be about 5000 each month but it’s gone up to 6500 and I haven’t changed anything. No gas. Water is about 1000.
Stand-alone house, ~16,000 or so per month for electric, higher in the winter as we have in-floor heating (which I thought would be cheaper but it’s not)

Water :4500 ( we have a collective water billing system. Should I use more water, the price stays the same. Which is a pain, since we’re not home much…)
Electric: about 3000 in winter double that in summer. ( we’re never home)
2 people 1 LDK: gas is around 3-4000, electricity ranges from 3500-11000 and water is 4-5000 every second month.

This winter electricity was ridiculous at 17,000+ yen, and probably higher now at current prices.

Did you use four times the amount of energy, or was your bill four times higher? Those aren’t the same thing. Also, I guess you haven’t really been watching the news, or you would know that energy prices are climbing rapidly because Japan has been very dependent on Russia for the fuel to run power plants. There are government announcements and everything about what they’ll do to control power costs for people.
For a family of 4 in our 4LDK condo, our gas bill was ¥6000. Electricity is about ¥7200. Water is ¥10,000 (billed every 2 months).
One person, unfortunately my apartment runs on LP gas, my bill for last months usage was ¥12,830. They also decided to raise prices starting this month. Most of it is probably coming from the water heater, so I am trying to combat it by setting it low (currently at 42°) if the bill is still high I guess I’m gonna have to set it at <40, stop taking showers and fill the tub with Luke warm water and wash myself with a bucket…
Are you comparing with the previous month, or the same time last year? Either case is not exactly a fair comparison, but comparing with previous years June/July would be kinda fair. This June has been very hot, and the difference between usage in June vs May is very big.
Also, going from 1 person, will significantly increase the usage, and going from 1LDK to 2LDK will also increase the usage significantly.
Since you say that it was 1/4 the *price* before, I doubt that it’s actually 4 times the amount of energy. Prices have been going up like crazy the past few months/year, so how is the actual usage?
How is the usage Vs your wife’s previous usage?
Gaz went up about 45% compared to last year year at same volume usage. At least for us at tokyo gas.
Water is low, less than 3000.
Power is about 8000-10000(not factorin the cryptomining part obviously)
Overall our utilities bill went up about 30% compared to last year but the usage didn’t change much
Gas: 4,500 yen per month average (LP Gas. No choice)

You mentioned your gas bill is about ¥16,000 a month which is much higher than when you were living alone. Let me take a guess. Do you have LP gas which is used to heat the hot water and your wife takes daily full baths with long showers? Or perhaps leaving the hot water running constantly while washing dishes? These are the most likely culprits.
2 people, new-ish (build around 6-7 years ago) 2LKD + loft house. Outside of the 23ku in Tokyo. I cook a lot and take a bath almost daily. Wife and I shower at least once each daily. That all goes into the propane (and water/sewer, I suppose). I WFH so I’m home basically all the time = more aircon time. Electric is A-type 40amp service.

22,000 for electric, 6000 for gas and 6000 for water for 2 people in a 2LDK. For electric that’s 2 ACs running at 18～20c and a few desktop PCs running 24/7. It increased from about 18,000 last year.
We live in a 3LDK (2 people(. About 8,000 in electricity, 3,000 in gas an 3,000 in water. In winter, the gas bill is about 5,000 – 6,000 when we use floor heating. In peak summer electricity can become like 10,000.

I don’t understand my LP gas bill at all. I noticed this winter my bill was 7000 per month. During the summer months my bill is 3000 per month. I don’t know why my bill is double during winter. I don’t cook more or take longer showers during the winter months.
My water bill is 4000 every other month. My electricity during comfortable weather is 3000 but during the colder or hot months 5000 per month.
