Standing desks at work.

I have a back problem. My doctor wants me to use a standing desk. I work at a university and I know for a fact that we have standing desks in storage. My university has denied my request. I understand why this is from a cultural perspective (everyone gets the same treatment and we don’t have one for everyone). Can I force them into giving me one with a note from my Dr?

Edit: Problem solved. I wrote an email to soumu politely re-requesting the desk with an additional note that I can provide a Drs note. They will deliver the desk to my office tomorrow apparently. Thanks for the advice.

  1. Japan has very strong labor laws with regards to employee health. Best you consult with a lawyer on it if absolutely necessary, as you have a right as an employee to a safe and healthy workplace.

You can try a soft push with a note frrom your doctor, and if that doesn’t work, consult a labor lawyer.

  2. I also work at a university. I don’t think I would be able to commandeer a desk that is owned by another department for use in my office. If they were looking to get rid of it then it could be transferred to me, but typically everything in a university is “owned” by a department or individual who purchased the item with their budget. At least in my situation, this seems like the type of thing I’d be expected to purchase with my research funds but I don’t really know how other universities operate.

  3. Just buy your own desk if nothing works. It doesn’t cost as much and less stressful than doing all the nego with the departments..

  4. I bought a bed tray and put it on top of my work desk. It only cost me less than 3000 yen.
