Hello r/movingtojapan,
Context: I’m 24, M, Currently in SG, half working and studying, halfway through university in Human Resource Management and looking forward to pursue a MBA by 2026, and hopefully reaching JLPT N1 by 2028. By 2028, I will have a Masters, JLPT N1 and about 5-6 years of Experience in my field.
My goal is to: Move to Japan, joining a international / local company doing a HR function.
My questions are:
\- Is it realistic to look for Japan opportunities in my current field? (As I do not currently see much demand for oversea HR personnel.)
\- Knowing that Japanese companies normally hire locals for the HR function, will studying / specializing in Japanese Labor Laws help in raising my chances for an oppournity?
\- Any advice on routes of visa to achieve said goal? I currently dabble in my research on Skilled Visa or Humanities Visa but is quite confused on any routes that is available for me.
\- Any tips / milestones / advice for my current goal?

While getting “a Masters, JLPT N1 and about 5-6 years of Experience” is good ‘nough to succeed in Japan, but **WHY THE FCK BOTHER**?
For that amount of heroic effort, you could ALREADY be very successful in NYC/London/Paris at double or triple the salary.

HR is one of LEAST specialities looking for gaijin. While anything is possible, getting an high^level HR in Japan as a Western gaijin would have astronomically high odds of success.
